EXAMINATIONS
FELLOWSHIP
THREE options to be selected from the following four:
PART A (Composition)
A portfolio of compositions submitted by the candidate which must comprise at least two pieces with contrasting instrumentation and scoring. The entire portfolio must not exceed a total of 20 minutes duration in performance.
PART B (Techniques/History)
A written examination of two papers each being three hours duration. They will comprise a paper of Harmony and Counterpoint and music history.
PART C (Performance)
A live performance recital of an approved programme on the candidate's chosen instrument/voice lasting no shorter than 35 and no longer than 40 minutes. The programme (with accurate timings) must be submitted for approval, together with copies of the pieces to be performed, at least six weeks before the examination date. This recital is expected to be technically challenging whilst showing a depth of musical insight and consideration to programme planning.
PART D (Dissertation)
The candidate will be required to submit a dissertation on an approved topic not exceeding 10,000 words (excluding footnotes and appendices).
LICENTIATESHIP
This diploma is designed for the performing musician. It has two components; live performance recital and viva voce.
PERFORMANCE
The candidate will perform in a live recital of an approved programme lasting no shorter than 35 and no longer than 40 minutes on their chosen instrument/voice. The programme (with accurate timings) must be submitted for approval, together with copies of the pieces to be performed, at least six weeks before the examination date. The candidate will be expected to demonstrate technical ability to a high standard and show a depth of musical knowledge and insight. The structure and suitability of the programme will also be taken into account.
VIVA VOCE
To be held shortly after the end of the recital.
ASSOCIATESHIP
The requirements for this diploma are similar in structure to that of the fellowship: THREE out of the following four options to be selected.
PART A
A portfolio of compositions submitted by the candidate which must comprise at least two pieces with contrasting instrumentation and scoring. The entire portfolio should be between 10-15 minutes in duration.
PART B
A three hour paper of counterpoint and music history.
PART C
A live performance recital of an approved programme on the candidates chosen instrument/voice lasting no longer than 20 minutes. The programme (with accurate timings) must be submitted for approval, together with copies of the pieces to be performed, at least six weeks before the examination date. The recital should aim to show technical assurance and musical sensibility in planning and projection.
PART D
Candidates will be required to submit an extended essay on an approved topic not exceeding 6,000 words (excluding footnotes and appendices).
CERTIFICATE
Candidates must take TWO of the options as required for the associate examination.
All diplomas will conclude with a viva voce examination. Where the performance option is chosen the viva will be held shortly after the end of the recital. If the performance option is not chosen the candidate will be required to attend a viva following submission of all the written components at an agreed time and venue.
Examinations will normally take place at a venue within the United Kingdom. For those resident in other countries alternative arrangements will be made and potential candidates are invited to contact the Guild in advance of application.
